It's really more like it's in beta, because vanilla OpenMW is currently very stable and very functional. The developers believe it will be done and in 1.0 within 1-2 years from now.39 doesn't mean it's in alpha. OpenMW has been in development for about 8 years, and is in version. The OpenMW team has been in contact with Bethesda, and they've been given permission to make OpenMW because it requires you to own Morrowind in order to play. The OpenMW project is Open Source, and any mods created for OpenMW in C++ or OpenCS are not compatible with the original morrowind engine.

You can also create OpenMW mods in native C++. It is currently in Alpha, so it isn't finished. Also, you can create mods with the OpenMW construction Set, called OpenCS. If they aren't, you can change the mod ever so slightly to make it compatible. You can create mods in the classic construction set, and they will (most likely) be supported in OpenMW.

OpenMW uses the original morrowind save files, original morrowind, tribunal, and bloodmoon master files, and original mod files. It is created with the C++ language, and is available on Mac OSX, Windows, AND linux.
